A Grim Affair by Stanley, Rachel

My rating: 5 fun stars

A quick, fun and downright addictive read.

Emma is a young veterinarian with 2 cats who lives an absolutely normal life. So normal in fact, that her own mother has been known to accuse her of being boring. She buries herself in her work at the clinic and minds her own business. A love life and possible men interests... Yeah, right! Completely inexistent.

Well, apart from the handsome hulk who keeps invading her dreams. Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome, or Mr. TDH for short. He's supposed to be just a sexy dream. Until the day he announces 'without any preamble. No "hello" no "kiss-my-ass," no nothing' ... that they need to talk because he needs to know who she is.

As it turns out, it's not Emma's 'own dumb-ass psyche deciding that she needs to dream about Mr. TDH every sodding night.' Not only is he real and visiting her every night, but he is also The Grim Reaper. Well, the Keeper of Souls to be exact but who cares about that little detail!
The best or worst part of it all.. only Emma can see him. Even in the middle of a jam-packed coffee shop where he suddenly appears 'carrying a huge fuck-off blade' and obviously NOT blending in.

Convincing herself that The Grim Reaper is the real deal and not an elaborate hallucination is not quite as easy as it seems, especially when, for the past few weeks, she's had an uneasy feeling that she's being stalked. Another somewhat unbelievable notion because, as Emma herself puts it...

'why would anyone bother to follow me around anyway. I'm an average looking nobody with long red hair, hazel coloured eyes and a smattering of freckles across my nose. And no, I'm not looking for the sympathy vote, I'm just being realistic. I'm not worth the effort of stalking.'

And this is how her tale begins. One full of fun, sass and smiles. Of course a bit of drama too alongside a few scorching kisses, a good measure of laughter and a pinch of love. Add in a fabulous BFF and two adorable fur balls, a wonderful family and a lot of feeling and there you go! The perfect recipe for an unputdownable read. The perfect escape from reality on a cold and dreary day. Or any day for that matter.

Part paranormal love story and part mystery, A Grim Affair is guaranteed to hook you from the very first page. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is that makes it so damn irresistible! The intriguing mystery of the stalker or that of the Grim Reaper, the wonderful characters or the feeling that leaps from the page, the funny moments and witty banter, or the heart-warming relationship between family and friends. It's a delightful feel-good read that I simply couldn't put down.

Give this book a try people and I guarantee you won't regret it.

Happy reading everyone
