Maurkim's War by Jackson, Joe

My rating: 5 dark stars

My first taste of this author's work and I want more. Because this was awesome!

I picked the short story up because of the fabulous cover. And because it is free. If any of you want to read it, you can download it here.

There's more than one way to destroy a kingdom...

Gnolls had invaded the Kingdom of Kashimy causing whidespread chaos. Tales of the bloodthirsty savages pillaging and burning the villages in their path spread like fire setting the Kingdom into panic. But when their crafty leader is captured, the entire attack seems to have been a feint. And General Montague cannot help to wonder if there isn't more to the whole deal than what they're seeing.

Hard to believe the brilliant gnoll walked right into their trap. And the fact that the creature isn't anything like the filthy savage beast everyone had pictured, adds even more to the general's doubts. The gnoll had a grace and dignity about him, despite the indignity of his imprisonment. And his eyes... they had that look of someone who is about to lay down a crushing hand of five-card when everyone else thought he was bluffing.

He is called Maurkim. And his aim was and remains to destroy the kingdom. But how can he possibly achieve it shackled and tortured by the prince? Will the general figure out what he the gnoll is truly up to, before it's too late? You'll need to read this and find out.
What should you expect if you give it a try?

A heartbreaking little tale that shows real beasts don't always come with fur and claws. One that might just make you wonder how you could assign a 'worst part' to something that's already horribly savage. And it will keep you guessing till the very end.

An awesome short story with a brilliant end that you will NOT see coming. Wonderfully written, intriguing and unique.

If you love grimdark you have got to Maurkim's War a try!
