Brute by Fielding, Kim

My rating: 5 sweet stars

"Wh-why so k-kkind?

"I don't know. It doesn't... it doesn't cost me anything to do these things does it?"

My first book by Kim Fielding and I fell in love.
I fell in love with a Brute.
I fell in love with an ugly, mutilated ogre.
I fell in love with one of the gentlest and kindest souls ever written.

Gentle and compelling, touching and unforgettable. Brute is now among my all time favorite tales!

The blurb will give you a pretty good idea what this book is about.
At seven and a half feet of ugly, and of disreputable descent, Brute leads a lonely life in a world where magic is commonplace. He is a simple laborer with no other future in sight. But heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and Brute proves to be one when rescuing the prince of Tellomer despite being maimed in the process.
Since a maimed man cannot perform a laborer's heavy chores any longer, Brute has no choice but to accept the prince's generosity and take up a post at the palace in Tellomer. He is set as a guard for a single prisoner. A very easy task compared to all that Brute had faced.
One that will turn out to be the challenge of his life.

The prisoner, Gray Leynham, is said to be both a witch and a traitor. And he dreams of people’s deaths—dreams that come true.
For years he had led an existence of sheer misery: blind, chained, and rendered nearly mute by an extreme stutter. And Brute is told by each and everyone around, that Gray deserves his wretched fate. Brute must do his job and leave the traitor be.

But Brute is not the unfeeling beast his name would suggest. The name given by others, because of his ogreish appearance. He is one of the kindest, gentlest and most caring souls ever written.
Then how can he enjoy his wonderfully smelling food when the prisoner next to him is eating a downright disgusting gruel?
How can he sleep peacefully in his soft bed with another soul shivering naked on the filthy and cold stone floor only a few feet away?

Nobody had ever called Brute kind before, and no one had ever seemed to care for or about him. But people at the palace look beyond the ugly face. And Brute slowly starts to discover his own worth. First as a friend and a man and then as a lover.

"Nobody will have me. .... My hand. My ugly face. My ogreish body. ... My mother was a whore and my father was thief. I'm nobody. Nothing."

This is what Brute is convinced of! And damn if I didn't want to reach through the pages and give him a big hug! Because he is everything!

And Gray is the first to realize it.

"Don't you d-dare say you're ugly or stupid or w-worthless. Don't you dare! Y-you're a giant because an ordinary man's body is ttoo small for what you are."

Gentle and soft, slow and full of feeling, and most of all, incredibly beautiful, Brute is not one of those fast-paced tales full of twists and turns that you don't see coming. It doesn't give you amazing revelations or edge of the seat suspense. And yet, it manages to be just as compelling. Through a powerful message quietly delivered. It is endearing and so very touching. Haunting and heartbreakingly beautiful!

A vivid and realistic setting that you can practically see, provides the perfect background for wonderfully fleshed out characters to enact an unforgettable tale that is bound to make any reader feel.
Brute is the story of two broken souls who find strength and solace in each other.
An ugly, mutilated freak and a blind stuttering wretch... And I love them both!

"Please don't do this..."
"Don't what?" Gray reached up and cupped his cheek in one hand. "Don't t-tell you my heart beats for you? Don't tell you my ssoul sings for you? Don't tell you that you're hope to me, l-life to me, the c-center of my fucking universe? ... I love you, idiot."

Brute is one of those tales that reach into the readers 'hearts. One of those stories that linger. One of those reads to be cherished and remembered because of their gentle beauty, as well as compelling message. It made me sigh and tear up and had my heart twisted into knots. And I loved every single page of it!

"Some man is going to find you, Brute, and he's going to sweep you off your great big feet, and then he's gonna spend the rest of his days realizing how damned lucky he is!"

If an ugly Brute has happy endings, or can live a life filled with love, I'll leave that for you to find out. It won't be a fast-paced ride, but a slow uphill climb you're bound to remember.

If you love M/M fantasy or romance, this Brute here is a MUST READ!

It's gentle and compelling, touching and unforgettable.

Happy reading everyone
