Book Review: Taeryn: The Awakening

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A solid debut of a fascinating series!
Extremely well written, steamy and emotional, Taeryn: The Awakening is one of those books with both depth and great character development.
'A naïve human girl with special powers.
Two fugitive aliens.
One electrifying connection.
Can their love keep her alive?
Or will it kill her?'
Taeryn Vega didn't become an actress for the fame and fortune. It was therapeutic to get inside the heads of her characters, to delve into their psyches and figure out what made them tick. Acting meant she could be anybody but herself. And it helped her forget she was a freak. You see, Taeryn had visions. Visions that would have pegged her as a prime candidate for a white padded cell in a hospice. So she kept them secret and even tried to forget they existed. If she could.
When she is offered a leading role at the side of the famous Tristan Kando, Taeryn instantly agrees. But nothing prepares her for the intense empathic connection she has with the guy at first meet. Granted, he is gorgeous! But that is by far not enough to justify the way he makes her feel. And Taeryn had promised herself to never get romantically involved with someone like him - the epitome of a player and an infamous ladies' man.
And if that weren't enough, Taeryn suddenly finds herself hearing her director Kat Russo, talking inside her head.
As it turns out, Tristan and Kat were not quite what they seemed. They were aliens; beings from another planet, hiding on Earth from a cruel alien ruler who will stop at nothing to destroy them and their kind. And Taeryn seemed connected to them in a way that shouldn't be humanly possible.
As far as she was concerned, 'it was bad enough that she was empathic, now she was telepathic too. Her life had truly turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone.'
Through Tristan and Kat, Taeryn is drawn into a disturbing world she never knew existed. A world where Taeryn isn't even sure the feelings she harbors for the duo are real. One that begs an answer to a question she's afraid to ask. 'They weren't human. Was she?'
Emotional turmoil, drama and a rollercoaster of feelings! This is what Taeryn goes through in her journey of self discovery and acceptance. And the readers will be swept along for the ride.
Tristan and Kat are a package deal and Taeryn will need to accept them as they are. But she may be better off without them, then deal with all the shit they brought to the table. Especially since the connection they share seems to be killing Taeryn.
Kat and Tristan themselves do not seem to understand the connection either. And they find themselves swept in a race against time to not only save Taeryn from the effects of that connection, but also keep her safe from their own enemies who are now after the unusual human girl too.
Taeryn: The Awakening is a beautifully written well polished debut that's both strong and complex as well as emotional. Sci-Fi with mystery and steam, this may not be quite everyone's cup of tea. Because it deals with emotional turmoil and psychological reactions, psychic and energetic powers and an inner journey of self-discovery of not one but three MCs. And these themes are extensively detailed, at times in detriment of pace and plot.
For those readers who love emotion and feeling, as well as a great inner journey of self discovery steeped in doubt and insecurities, Taeryn is a real treat! It comes with a slower pace but if you don't mind it, I highly recommend you give this book a try.
You'll most likely love it.
Happy reading everyone
