Book Review: Crown of the Fallen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
'Endure. Survive. I am a survivor.'
Meet Brela.
A woman finding herself after two years of darkness, regret, and solitude, in a dungeon.
A survivor who learned to become comfortable with the darkest pieces of her soul.
A mere bystander caught up in a rush, that happened to give her purpose.
In a world of Knights fallen from grace, who rule with cruelty and thrive on brutality, Brela was imprisoned for killing her abusive husband in self defence. Beaten and tortured for years in the Fallen's dungeon, she slowly became a mere shadow of herself... Broken and hopeless.
Until the day a newly imprisoned young girl needs her. And Brela has a reason to live again. One that will land her not only smack down in the middle of a rebellion against those who'd imprisoned her, but also give her a second chance. At a life with meaning, at family and, if she's brave enough to allow it, even love.
Crown of the Fallen is a tale of magic, betrayal and rebellion for the sake of a kingdom and its people. But it is just as much Brela's tale.
A tale of endurance, strength and courage, of hope and belonging, and perhaps most of all, of love.
The all-consuming kind of love that burns the world to embers yet leaves profound peace and rightness in your soul.
The plot is deliciously intriguing, while the pace is just right to keep you turning pages as fast as you can. The wordbuilding is good enough to make you clearly picture both places and scenes, but the characters themselves are what sets this tale apart. The perfectly imperfect fully fleshed out characters and the feeling leaping from the page.
I LOVED Brela! So beaten up and broken, and yet so fierce and strong... And totally lacking a filter at times. If you've ever told yourself 'I should shut the fuck up' AFTER you've just blurted an uncomfortable truth or question, you might just see yourselves in Brela. Been there, done that. You probably will too. Brela is fantastic. A perfectly imperfect ballsy lady doing the best with the shitty hand she'd been dealt.
And don't even get me started on Ryker. The big badass warrior who's supposed to give his all to the cause. From the time Brela was dragged into his life, he had to almost constantly remind himself 'he needed to get his shit together,' because the last thing he should be thinking about is love.
Especially when the woman in question would either slap him in the face at the slightest suggestion of more between them, or run him through with a dagger.
Ryker is swoonworthy. After you get to see behind his initial cold asshole facade that is. He is the perfect grumpy and determined gentle balance to Brela's broken heart.
Layered and gritty, yet full of hope and love, and so much damn feeling, Crown of the Fallen is one book that will have any romantasy fan swoon.
It is not perfect and could do with an extra edit to smoothen the flow and rhythm of the prose, but the story within its pages is .... Chef's Kiss.👌
Happy reading everyone
And remember:
'We can't stop everyone from embracing the darkness in this murky world. We just need to she'd as much light as possible and hope it makes a difference. Even if that light only touches a few people, it is something.'
