Every once in a while we come across a book that sings for us. This one sang for me! Why?
Because it was all 'candy canes and pinecones and epic and awesome'.
A friend of mine recommended me this book a while back telling me simply: "You have got to read this!" And I bought it the next day because Manju never recommended me anything bad. I've started to read it the next day in a BR with her and fell in love!
This book pulled on all my heart-strings! It made me cry and laugh, it made me get sad and frustrated; it even made my heart skip a beat once in a while. I couldn't set it down! It gained a place of honor on my shelf of favorites and among those few paperbacks I'd carry in my suitcase even across continents. Even now, at the reread, it made me feel the same: "all candy canes and pinecones, and epic and awesome!"
Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.
And let me just start this by saying: I love Ox!! He is one of the best characters I have ever read! Special, epic and awesome!
"Clumsy and foolish, all hands and arms and legs, graceless and dull, too big for himself", that's how Ox sees himself. He is quiet and speaks too slow, and doesn't really fit in anywhere.
But "it's always the ones who are the quietest who often have the greatest things to say!"

And quiet Ox is an old soul! Kind and caring, brave and strong, he can bring even the toughest man to tears when a very simple gesture of kindness makes him wonder that it was done "Like he mattered. Like he meant something. Like he was important!" "Dumb as an Ox" he is supposed to be according to his father, and Ox has learned and accepted it, until the day comes when he is proven wrong. The day that Ox meets Joe.
Little 10 year old Joe crashes like a whirlwind into Ox's life, talking and talking and talking, after having not spoken a word for two years. Broken in his own way, Joe and his family, or pack to be exact, turn Ox's life upside down and teach him what it means to be cared for, to be wanted, to be loved!

Yes, I love Ox! But the side characters are also memorable. T.J.Klune wrote them all like a charm! Every single one of them has a perfect place in the story and I found myself rooting for them all. All of Klune's characters get resentful and angry and petty and emotional just like normal people. They pretty much leap off the page.
For me, the best part of this book was the "feeling"! It made me feel so much! But then feeling is not all T.J.Klune gives!
He gives us a well paced, well written book, with a solid plot and a great writing style! Short chapters and simple sentences that manage to convey a lot more, despite their shortness. He gives us sorrow and heartache, but compensates it with delightful humour that will have you burst out laughing several times over. Sweet and subtle humour, to equal the sweet and subtle romance - I'm telling you folks: this is one great writer!
Even though the romance is predominant, it doesn't dominate the story. We get a lot of action and awesome bromance too. But the romance is still the best part for me! The friends to lovers shift is so subtle and well written! Learning together, growing together, getting stronger and healing together - those were some of the highlights of the story for me.

If you love sweet romance and subtle humour, fast-paced action and emotional roller-coasters, this is just the book for you!
Hope you will love it just as much as I did! :)
