Only on a full moon by Kelly Maida
My choice for this week's read-aloud session, for my little group of adventures. :)
This is a nice little tale of an Enchantress who lost her powers to an evil witch when she was a child, but never gave up hope on getting them back.
And yet, she is not the center of the story. The Huntsman is. Faithful companion to the enchantress he is the one who embarks on a dangerous journey to the Enchanted Forest to help her out.
The story is very short and easy to read, with a classical fairytale feel. And it is accompanied by lovely images on each page, which is both an advantage and a drawback. The images seem disjointed, some being classic fairytale drawings while others are clear modern Photoshop art. Therefore, they will not appeal the same to either children or grown-ups. The smaller children in my read-aloud liked only selected few of them, while the bigger ones preferred others.
The story itself was also deemed nice by girls, while the boys lost interest halfway through it. Too boring for some or girlish for others.
All in all, if you have a little girl who loves tales about witches, good and bad, and brave loyal companions, you could give this a try. It does make a good bedtime story and it is also available on Kindle Unlimited.
Happy reading! :)
