Crimson Mage by Dreyer, Dorothy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Crimson Mage gives the readers a unique blend of apocalyptic, epic and urban fantasy that completely took me by surprise.

'The Council of the Seven, the seven mages, the seven chakras, the seven deadly sins... the seven circles of hell.'

This is how the Empire of the Lotus will either rise or fall.

'Upon the one hundredth reincarnation of the Lotus empress, the dark god Kashmeru would send out his shadow army—Pishacha—to destroy the reborn empress, which in turn would bring about the collapse of the universe.'
He would first beckon his empress and it was fate that Lakshmi would answer.

In a world where mages are outlawed, forbidden to use their powers and imprisoned, Mayhara Guatama made a deal to surrender her mage status and pledge her life to the New Order. By working for the government she is given a chance to get her family out of the prison camp they had been taken to.

But a cryptic message from her old guru is bound to turn Mayhara's life completely upside down. Because the the empress has been reincarnated and already on her way to Kashmeru. And Mayhara is now the only elite Crimson Mage left.
Mages are bound to protect and serve The Lotus Empress and Mayhara is called to duty. Rescue the Empress from Kashmeru's clutches and save the world.
But that means going against her agreement with the government and breaking the law. And Mayhara's chance of getting her family out of the prison camp would fully disappear.

Of course Mayhara would love to decline. But fate seems to have other plans. All she had worked for and everything she had sacrificed is suddenly gone in one night. And Mayhara is not only left with no chance of saving her family, but also in danger of loosing her own freedom. But what if she had never really been free after all?

Teaming up with Jae, Mayhara is swept in a race against time to find the Lotus Empress and prevent the end of the world.
Full of drama, action and twists and turns, with a unique magic system and a fascinating mix of cultures, Crimson Mage has picked my interest from the very beginning and I am eagerly waiting to dive into the sequel. Especially after that end.
