Bloodbound Nocturne by Amy J. Wenglar

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A great first book. Fast paced, intriguing and very entertaining.

Sophia Kelly moves across the country to go to college, hoping for a fresh start. A fresh start as well as an escape from a dreary life with her single mother who is not only addicted to drugs but also keeps mumbling stuff about 'a gang of supernatural baddies,... faeries, vampires' and other stuff like that. Unfortunately, she is never clear about any of it and Sophia would rather give up on hearing her ramblings then trying to make any sense of them.

A fresh start across the country is just what Sophia needs to assert her independence, find love, and maybe even find herself in the process. Or so she thinks.

Her college experience turns bizarre from the very first day. She suddenly finds herself swept off her feet by the very supernatural her mother was mumbling about. No drug-addicted ravings after all, but sheer reality that Sophia is now forced to acknowledge. Especially since she seems to have been dragged smack down in the middle of a supernatural war only she can stop. With an ancient prophecy threatening to take away her future choices and a wild magic awakening inside of her.

And the grumpy vampire that keeps showing up in almost every aspect of her life doesn't help. Why is he so focused on protecting her? And why does he have to be so handsome? And why does he seem to resent Collin, one of her best friends?

As Sophia struggles to make sense of her bizarre college experience and discover the origins of her newfound magic she is caught bought in between worlds as well as in between destiny and love. What she will choose and how, you'll have to read this to find out.

For a debut novel and first in series, this was a very entertaining read and I admit I'm eager to know what comes next. The plot was fast paced and perhaps because of that, some of the things were left unexplained. The characters were nicely drawn but their jumps through feelings felt unnatural at times. From love to murderous hate or from confusion to sudden understanding or acceptance - that just didn't work for me.
Sophia's choices didn't quite make sense at times either and her swooning over each and every gorgeous looking male took her a bit down in my book. However, I loved both Dr.D and Collin and hope to see more of them in the sequel. And I did love the story!

All in all, a solid new debut that makes for a very entertaining read.
