Aequitas by Vieira, M.J.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When everything around you is a lie, and the truth is terrifying, what do you have left? Well, my dears, you have the fight. You have your soul and you always have to fight for the justice of the weak. Welcome to the end of times. Welcome to the Dawn of Aequitas.

All actions have consequences.
And this time around, the stakes have never been higher.

Aton is free and it is up to Jade and Onyx to send him back to the hell from which he came. But, it won’t be easy. Aton is set to exact his revenge on the Creator and once he gets to Eden, he will make sure all of it burns to ash. Jade will never reach Eden and save the innocent from Aton’s wrath without the help of some unlikely allies…
The day of reckoning has come for Jade’s world. The age of Aequitas is upon her.

It doesn't really matter that Jade had never asked for this; never wanted the fate of the world to rest on her shoulders. She never wanted to be a savior, weapon, or anything. And yet, this is exactly what she is regarded as.
Battle a God and save the world or join a God and destroy it? It's as simple as that. Except that it isn't.

And Jade finds herself smack in the middle of a battle between light and darkness, at risk of loosing not only the one who has become her most beloved, but also her very soul.

Just as the previous installment, Aequitas is a book that deftly combines the best in character build-up, plot and narration. It is a fast paced read full of dark and bloody scenes, as well as pain and suffering interwoven with an internal struggle that will leave you reeling. The light is not there as much here, where justice reigns supreme, but I've got to hand it down to this author - her darkness makes for a first class read!

'So many pieces of me continue to be chipped away, sluffed off to wither and die until there is nothing left of me.'

The characters shine and this time Jade steals the show. Her suffering, doubts and internal struggle practically broke my heart while her courage and determination against all odds was inspiring.

'I'd never thought I was truly evil. Never saw myself as a monster. But what if I am? How can a monster do good? And why should a heathen like me find love?'

Just as the previous two books, perhaps even more so, Aequitas is a dark, bloody and brilliant tale, written in a compelling manner - a nail-biting, edge-of-the-seat read that you won't be able to set down.

Will Jade get to keep her love? And her soul? Can Death be killed? Or perhaps delayed with a solid punch? Will Jagger embrace his calling and The Creator answer a desperate plea? Will Aton get his revenge and burn the world to ash? You're gonna have to read this to find out. But be ready for one hell of a ride.

The Veritas series is a must read for all dark fantasy lovers! I highly recommend it. If you're not afraid of the darkness, take a leap of faith and give this a try! And who knows, you may end up loving it just as much as I did.

'Just because you know something needs to be done doesn't make it easier.'
but
'Courage is knowing you're afraid and continuing on anyway.'

May you have the courage to follow your own truth, especially if it takes you out of the light.
