Sorceress Of Truth by Groom, J.D.

My rating: 4.5 magic stars

ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Jodi! I loved it!

A great debut by J.D. Groom! Sorceress of Truth is one of those novels that somehow manages to draw you in and you find yourself reluctant to set down.

Extremely imaginative and beautifully written, this YA novel seamlessly intertwines pretty cool magic with vampires, fae, elves, angels and demons, as well as a promise of much more to come. And in a fantasy world where all the above elements have already been depicted in a myriad of ways, this author still manages to pull off something new and bring originality to the table.

Here, the vampires don't sparkle, the fae have a different kind of magic, the elves are... well, you won't see it coming and much more! Combine all of this with perfectly real-seeming characters a great and easy flowing narrative, an intriguing mystery to which the clues are slowly and brilliantly dropped like small pieces of a puzzle and there you go! The perfect recipe for a great read for every YA fan out there!

17 year old Tory Harper wants nothing more than to fit in. Her relentless classmates had made her school life hell, so a family relocation and a change of schools was exactly what she needed. A new beginning where Tory seems to finally fit in. She is even welcomed into a small group, and is especially enraptured by Kylan, the 'big brother' with a troubled past of his own.

Only things don't seem to be quite as simple as they seem and Tory finds herself thrust into the middle of a world of magic, mystery, and treacherous evils. Of course her first impulse it to wonder if her new friends may not be particularly sane.
'Belial? Hell? Was everyone here crazy?'

And of course she refuses to believe any of the weird stuff!
'There was no way I was going to get caught up in all of this. Next, they're going to tell me that there are unicorns roaming the woods and mermaids living in the lake.'
Any normal person would react the same way if you ask me.

But, when a house party turns into a massacre and a familiar face reveals herself to be a vampire, Tory needs to reconsider and start believing despite all harboured misgivings. And the fact that everyone around her starts telling her that she is the one mentioned in a certain major prophecy and that she is supposedly destined to accomplish a great feat only manages to confuse and scare Tory more.
Because, as she uselessly tries to reason with both her new friends and herself... All of this...
'It's too much. I'm just... me.'

But there's nothing 'just' about Tory, as she will soon find out. I'm not going to spoil and tell you what makes her so special, you're gonna have to read this to find out! :D What I will tell you though is that I didn't see it coming.

I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is that makes this novel such a great read. It could be the well-written characters that smoothly develop in front of your eyes, or the ingenuity with which the creatures are presented; perhaps the masterful way of leaving hints for the reader to build that big puzzle, or the flawless and wonderfully flowing narrative... In the end all that matters is that Sorceress of Truth delivers, regardless of what you're looking for.

There is one element here that I normally resent in all books. A love triangle. I do not like love triangles at all, because I resent that sharing and indecision that comes with it. And yet, I have to admit I didn't mind this particular love triangle here. Because here it made sense. Kudos to the author for pulling that off for me.

I am not rooting for both Tory, as well as her little troupe and looking forward to the sequel!

Sorceress of Truth is a great fast flowing read that I highly recommend to all YA lovers out there.
